Work(OUT) from Home!

The past few years we faced a global pandemic that forced us to change the way we go about our day. Our homes became our everything from our work to our gym in which we had to adapt and find new ways to live life!

When it comes to working out from home in college, things can obviously be more difficult whether you have limited space in your dorm room or a scarceness of equipment. Here are three ways you can improve your workout from home experience!

No Studio, No Problem.

"A lot of what you’ll find with most at-home workouts is about maintaining your current level of fitness"

In today's world, we have access to a plethora of knowledge with the touch of a button. And this only became more prevalent during the pandemic. For the fitness world, this meant creating a virtual environment that would mirror that of which individuals would have experienced if they were to go to a studio in person for a class. In college in particular, you may not have access to a car or a fitness studio nearby so this is where you must adapt. Utilize the internet to find workout plans and training videos on apps and websites. Yoga and Zumba are two types of workouts that render hundreds of thousands of instructor-led videos for the public to access. Get together with the people you live with and create a class setting that is safe and fun!

Stay Fit for Less

The newest fad such as the Peloton or SoulCycle bike can be a real hit to your bank account costing as much as $1000 dollars. Most of the time this also excludes many of the additional costs you will have to pay after purchasing the main piece of equipment. But - there are alternative options. Jump ropes, resistance bands, and hand weights are all a cost effective purchase that will give you the same calorie burn and muscle gain as any other workout would.

Eyes on the Prize

"Traveling may be difficult right now, but with a few computer clicks, you could be riding your stationary bike on the streets of Lisbon, or anywhere else you choose"

Get creative! If you can't find equipment, utilize household objects such as chairs and tables to get your workout in. I promise you'll feel your triceps burn doing dips on a chair just as much as you would on a weight bench! It is important to get fresh air so try bringing a few of your workouts outside whether that's a run in your neighborhood or a backyard soccer game. This is a great way to destress and still get a meaningful workout in.

The Bottom Line

Working out doesn't mean spending hundred of dollars a month or driving hours to get to the nearest studio. This is especially unobtainable as a college student balancing school, work, and a social life! Find what works best for you, whether that's a free online workout video plan or purchasing second hand equipment and stick with it. It is important to keep your body moving daily, regardless of gyms being open or guidelines restricting public congregations for fitness purposes. Stay motivated and make the most of what you have, because something is always better than nothing.
