How Much is Enough?

As college students it's already hard enough to find the time to workout. So this often prompts the question: How much exercise do college students really need? There is no straightforward answer to this question. Everyone's bodies are different and require different needs which is what makes exercise very subjective.

According to the Department of Health and Human Services 2018 Physical Activity guide adults between the ages of 18 to 64 should target two categories of excessive weekly: cardio and muscle strengthening. You do not need to engage in both everyday but it is important that you get in at least 25-50 minutes of one! Whether it is in 10 minute intervals throughout your day or a 50 minute run after class, there is no right way to do it. So what exactly is the difference between the two?

Cardio:

Cardio Exercise involves getting your heart rate up to a moderate or vigorous rate that will increase both your heart and lung endurance. You can engage in cardio exercise through various activities such as running, biking, swimming, jumping rope, walking, and playing various sports.

Muscle Strengthening:

Muscle Strengthening exercises differ from cardio exercises because they target your bones, muscles, and balance. These exercises are typically low impact so are beneficial for managing chronic pain and stregthening muscles and bones in your body. These exercises can range from weight training to endurance exercises, to yoga and many more in between.

Now how can you make sure you get enough exercise while on campus? Always have it in the back of your mind. Whether this be taking the stairs over the elevator, hitting the recreational center in between classes, or riding your bike to school. There are many ways to ensure you find time to get the necessary amount of exercise in while still maintaining a busy schedule. Stay motivated and keep track of your work and time everyday and you will be on the right track.
